Buffalo Bills starting center Eric Wood could be back on the playing field this Sunday when the Bills play the Miami Dolphins.

Wood has been recovering from a knee injury suffered in the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. A medical exam, according to various media reports, showed Wood had a partially torn MCL in his left knee and would likely be out for the rest of the season. However, the Bills’ medical staff has been encouraged by Wood’s progress overcoming the injury.

“I want to come back this week and give us a little spark up front and see if I can’t help our offense get back on track,” Wood told buffalobills.com.

Bills’ head coach Chan Gailey said he isn’t surprised that Wood wants to come back and help the team in a game which won’t have much impact on the Bills’ postseason hopes.

“He’s a competitor, a great competitor,” Gailey said. “He’s a fighter and it doesn’t shock me at all that he wants to get back and try to help us finish this thing strong.”

Wood has suffered a number of injuries since being drafted by the Bills, being placed on injured reserve in two of his first three seasons. Now, he doesn’t want to go on the I-R again.

“I’ve always wanted to come back and play,” Wood told buffalobills.com. “I didn’t want to go on I-R again and I told (general manager) Buddy (Nix) that immediately. I don’t want to go on I-R and I don’t want the season to end like that. At the time we had a chance of making the playoffs. At that point I thought being here, this is my fourth year, if we make the playoffs there’s no way I want to be sitting on I-R. So I’m going to try to make it back this week and I know we’re out of it, but there’s still a lot to play for.”
